I'm not all that wise on diesel engines but a few
things I know about them makes me wonder why the difference
in longevity. Anyone please chime in if they would like.

The first things I've noticed is the fuel. Gas
seems to be a much better solvent than Diesel fuel and it would seem to degrade
the oils much faster and cause faster wear.

Second is that diesels are built a little stronger
as they have higher compression ratios to self ignite the fuel and need to extra
strengths to hold together.

Third when you compress the air fuel mixture don't
you have a more uniform burn (cleaner) vs. igniting with a spark
plug?

It is amazing what a year old set of data provides and yes, you are
using great engine lubricant, Delo 400. Between Bob Helt's Corvair
recommend procedure for selecting Corvair Engine Oil and Kermit's great
search results, we are having fun again on this subject!

I looked at my last year's five quart engine oil jugs and the

gave all the CI-4/SL or plus oils from the various manufacturers.

Very good article. It makes me feel good that we
at least use Delo 400 in all of our cars and trucks and have for the
last 5 years. Just as critical is the oil filter and changing oil
religiously (no surprise).

Just as interesting in the section
where he tries to debunk some of the myths concerning flushing,
synthetic oils and adding after market additives.

Thanks Kermit
