But have not installed it yet, still waiting for the pully. I have two SafeGuard ignition systems. One for the Ultra Van and the other for the 1964 Greenbriar. Basically what it does is allow you to set the static timing of the </span><font color="#000000" class="">ignition to a stock setting. 12 degrees BTDC is about normal, but todays fuels don’t allow that. So </font><span style="caret-color: rgb(59, 67, 92); color: rgb(59, 67, 92); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;" class=""> <span style="font-size: 29px;" class="">dentonation</span></span><font color="#000000" class=""><span style="font-size: 39px;" class=""> </span>can occur. With the Ultra Van, it’s sometimes difficult to hear the </font><span style="caret-color: rgb(59, 67, 92); color: rgb(59, 67, 92); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;" class=""> </span><span style="caret-color: rgb(59, 67, 92); color: rgb(59, 67, 92); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 29px;" class="">dentonation</span><font color="#000000" class=""> taking place. But with the SafeGuard you have a series of lights that let you know how may individual cylinder are being retarded at the same time. On the Greenbriar it allows a higher ignition timing setting. So when I’m on the flat road and the lights come on just momentary, I’m at the optimum ignition setting. With the Greenbriar that gives me about 12 inches <span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" class="">vacuum in cruise and about 20 MPG.</span></font><div class=""><font color="#000000" class=""><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" class=""><br class=""></span></font></div><div class=""><font color="#000000" class="">So basically it allow you to operate your Corvair engine at an</font><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" class=""> optimum setting. California and then Colorado. The retard function was very useful
especially in California with dense air and relatively low octane
premium gasoline. This was on a well used 95 HP engine with a 180
HP turbo system bolted on it. It worked OK until I made a large
throttle body fuel injection system that developed too much boost
for the old engine. The car is back together now with a
reasonably stock 145 cubic inch 150 HP turbo engine that has not
had any detonation issues. I disconnected the Safeguard when I
was chasing other wiring issues and have not reconnected it yet.
I have a couple new fuel injection projects in the works, so it
