[SCG] SCG-list Digest, Vol 120, Issue 2 case paint

Well, I think it’s possible that they might’ve started spraying them black later in the ‘64 Model year. I know that happened to the underbody (floor pans) - early ‘64s and earlier years the floor pans were left in red primer (with body color overspray) but somewhere later in the ‘64 Model year they started getting painted black - have never been able to pin down the exact date, but both Rich Thompson and I observed this when restoring our late ‘64 cars. Perhaps this also resulted in the differentials getting painted, although so far as I know the transmissions (PG) remained bare.

Mystery upon mystery.

Larry,

Thanks. I took photos of the undercarriage of the Lambrecht 1963 Corvair in Knoxville.

I do have photos of the axle shafts - they appear lightly rusted but I?m not sure if I am detecting a hint of black paint on the axles. If so, it must?ve been a very thin coating. I do not have photos of the axle flanges.

Also, does that differential appear to have black paint on it? I always thought they were left unpainted as well.

Regarding the transaxle I believe you are right in that it was left as cast iron. Eastwood has a paint finish that closely matches that called cast iron grey. The casting process would not always produce the cast grey but something between that and a "black" as cast color depending on how the casting was cleaned after the casting.

Thanks, Stan. Yes, I am quite familiar with ?cast iron grey? paint.

I am still questioning whether the axles were ever painted or not. If you look at the photos of the Lambrecht car, the control arms and crossmember are clearly chassis black - not rusted, but the axles are lightly rusted. Both were exposed to the same relatively mild environmental conditions of being stored indoors for over 50 years (so moisture was mostly from humidity, although I understand the building roof did eventually develop a leak) and the car was otherwise new, so it doesn?t seem that the axles would?ve rusted like that and the control arms would not if they had both been coated the same.

Well, they look like this right now, so I?m going to need to decide very soon - do I paint them black or coat them with ?bare steel? paint?
