Competition report:
Our Corvairs got a lot of public attention this year via competition.
Competition always changes in nature but still remains large.
There was only one entry in National SCCA racing this year by Jeff Moore
but the car did make it to the Runoffs.
There were several forays in regional/vintage racing by Eric Shakel,
Jim Brandenburg, Rob Fike ,and Ken Hand.
As always we had track events by NECC at Lime Rock and Pocono by Bayshore.
These track events alway have to be shared by other makes to cover the rental
costs.
NECC did a Corvair only event at Beaver run Aug. 30. This was notable for
the rain and for Corvair historic/vintage personalities; Donna Mae Minns and
Warren Derneshek who were associated with the Yenko racing effort.
The competition year started with a Racer's Workshop in Feb. at Gary
Funkhouser's shop, attend by about 60 people with obvious cabin fever.
The CORSA drags racers got to strut their stuff on the Monday preceeding
the Lexington Convention. Notable were the performances by the Whales and the
Rampsides. Sharon "Granny" LeVeque got to whip up on several men at the drag
races thanks to Billy Bruce's coaching.
The convention autocross was highlighted by Tony Ellison taking the Don
Yenko award on the black ice surface.
The annual Marshalltown Fire and Ice event was in Sept. Those attendees
will have a leg up on the entries in the Racers versus Autocrossers shoot- out
at the Regional convention in June '05.
Portland in July '05 will have a track event, drag race and autocross.
Perhaps the best public showing for competion Corvairs was the April '04
Hershey Vintage Hillclimb. The Yenko Stinger YS037 of Mark Gillespie's was the
featured car with a picture and article inside the cover of the event magazine.
Mark was reluctantly <GGG> interviewed on the PA system several times during
the day. Thousands were in attendance. Out of 65 entries a 64 roadster Corvair
was 4th and
Mark's Stinger driven by Michael LeVeque was 5th overall. Classic Motorsports
magazine also covered the Corvairs at this event.
The SCCA Solo II Nationals drew one Corvair entry from Charlie Clark and
Dick Berger which blew up it's "gernade" engine which is necessary to compete
now in this class (CP) of runaway development.
Corvairs did do quite well in SCCA's STS and Sreet Mod classes.
Several Corvairs participated in track events at Putnam Park put on by
Schardt's group and by the Mustang club. The successful goal was to pass 911
Porsches.
Watch for new cars debuting by; Dan Giannotti, Mark Gillispie, Rob Fike,
Rick Stansbury, Gary Funkhouser , and the LeVeques.
Competition points (for national and regional races, autocrosses, and drag
races) are due to me by Feb. 28, '05. Surprize me with your results and
stories!
