George- thanks for the tips. I actually don't plan on "racing" it, more
like open track days and the like for my own amusement. Great advice
though, coming from the BMW environment I know that there are people for
whom parsing the rule book is almost more fun than driving. - Jim

Jim,

Disruptive, not a chance! This group thrives on new ideas and being
different.

I can give you a little bit of my wisdom before you start down this path
though:

First thing you want to do is to research the sanctioning bodies that
are active in your area. Keep in mind what type of racing you want to
do, then determine what class you want to run in. Identify your
competition before you buy your car. You may give up on the Corvair
project somewhere along here, but I hope not. Know the rule book! Buy
your car and then build it to the rule book.

Do not build your car and then start looking to place it into a
classification, It just doesn't work that way. I will tell you this much
though, changing power plant/drive train combinations will limit you to
classes that were designed for all out, custom designed race cars. The
competition will be stiff and gaining the edge will be EXPENSIVE.

These are lessons learned from a guy that bought a V8 Convertible with
designs on racing it, only to find out that it doesn't fit easily into
any classification, and wouldn't be close to competitive if I could work
it into a class.
