First, of course, check to see that the idle is set without the vacuum  
advance line connected - and 8 degrees doesn't sound like very much initial  
advance to me. But, anyway, when you hook up the ported (not manifold)  vacuum, the 
advance should not change, because the "ported" vacuum port in the  carb 
should be above the throttle plate at idle, and not subject to vacuum.  If you have 
vacuum at idle, either the throttle plates are set too far open or  you are 
testing the "manifold" vacuum port - sourced from the manifold. How  much 
mechanical advance does your distributor provide at full advance. You want  about 
35 or 36 degrees total (Max). (Initial + mechanical) -  Seth
