Once again members of this group stepped up and freely offered their knowledge gained from years of experience to help a fellow Corvair guy.

The problem turned out to be a deteriorated wire at a terminal.  When I lifted it off the post the weight of the terminal was about enough to make it fall off.  (I'm sure the electrons had to pass in single file along that portion of the wire.)   I also need to remind myself to disconnect the battery before working on a project such as this and not waiting for sparks and a fuse to blow before doing so.

Anyway thanks to one and all who took the time to respond.
