Michael,

I’ve been contemplating an approach to the front end that sounds the same as your plan. I’d like to compare notes. You can reach me at jim.acker at comcast.net. Thanks.

I converted my Crown with a Corvair 4 speed to a big car powerglide initially. That moved the axle line back about 2". The next step was to go to a C5 differential. That moved the axles back about a couple more inches. That did put the outside u joints at a pretty severe angle but that was resolved by shortening the C5 axle shafts and using the stock (C5) CVs inside and out. the CVs are capable of operating at a much greater angle than convential unversal joints. The car is still on jack stands waiting for a new set of coil over shocks and springs but the driveline seems to run out good in our initial set up test run.
One issue you will have to address. The powerglide vacumn modulator mounts on the left rear of the transmission and will have to be removed and the opening plugged. That means you will have to have a pg with either a trans-brake (not reccommended) or a manual valve body. If a transbrake then you will need a manual electric switch to engage the transbrake in order to back up. Works ok but is really a pain unless you plan on doing alot of drag racing. The manual valve body only means you will have to shift to low range to take off and then shift manually to drive.
My adapter came from Mark Irons (canyonmancorvair at comcast.net) and was well made (all billet) and easy to use.

Hello,

I have a late model, rear engine convertible.
I am interested in whatever options exist for front end coil over springs.

Where should I be looking for vendor options?

Much Appreciated,

Kent Meyers

Kent,
A couple of months ago, I decided to switch to front coil overs to have more control over the ride height. If the top spring mount is kept stock, the choice of springs is very limited. I tried the conical spring from QA (3.5"x2.5"ID, 250#, 11"free length). After cutting 2", it was still too long and much too stiff. Coil Spring Specialties is making a pair of springs for me which should arrive in a couple of days. I am very anxious to install them after having made all the calculations necessary, I hope.
If you want, I will share the specs and final results.

Michael,

Any information you would be willing to share would be of great help.

Shortly after buying my car I replaced the tired springs with the small block V8 rated spring that Clark's offers.
They are on the stiff side but I did liked the stance they provided. Rear/Front were level height at that time.

I recently tried to lower the front end by 2" by cutting that amount out of the springs.
The ending result was the car came down about 3 1/2" which is too much for my taste.

It seems that I have to do things 2-3 times before I'm satisfied with a final change.
Something I expected but I was hoping to reduce those evolutions by this point.

Coil overs sound attractive as they offer the ability to make front end suspension changes and reverse those changes if found to be unacceptable, I hope.

I'll anticipate hearing from you when you're ready.

Thanks again.

Kent - I've done several Corvair's with coil-overs but am too busy to type it all out this morning. You can reach me at 310/422-2037 PST Archibald...
