The quickest, easiest method I know of telling the difference is in the
nipple where the rubber hose connects to the unit.  A vacuum advance (VA)
should be smooth, where a pressure retard (PR) should have a ridge around it
to keep the hose in place.  Best case would be to select one by the numbers
to get the best curve for the engine, but any VA will be better than a PR on
a non-turbo.  The engine should run with the PR distributor, but you won't
be happy with the performance or mileage.
