You should stare at a few more early-earlies... they came with the dust
caps.

I've not seen any on Vairs later than '62.

I'm older but not that old... not old enough to have bought a '62 anyway. 
Maybe a '69...

If that cap is intact, nurture it... hard to find one that's not cracked or
split.
