PALM SPRINGS CANCELS CORVAIR AUTOCROSS

The Corvair Autocross planned for November 11 in conjunction with the Great
Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet has been cancelled by the City of Palm
Springs. Ventura County Corvairs director Jack Pinard, Port Hueneme,
announced
that the club was notified August 10 that the airport site, the old East/West
runway, will be the scene of construction beginning October 1.

Lawrence Wedekind, Landside Operations Manager for Palm Springs International
Airport, confirmed the cancellation. He stated "the abandoned taxiway that
we have used for driver training and autocross events in the past will soon
be removed. Construction of a new employee parking lot in this area will begin
approximately October 1st. The area will not be available for these types of
events in the future."

The Ventura County Chapter #931 of Corvair Society of America had been
working for nearly two years to stage November autocross in Palm Springs. The
2003
event was abruptly cancelled when the airport closed the site for federally
mandated security construction. Pinard said the chapter appreciated the
strong
support the event had received from other clubs and individuals.
bWe thank everyone who has worked with us to keep Corvair autocross a viable
driving sportb, he added.

Club autocross director Jeff Ballard, Ventura, lamented the cancellation.
"As the only chapter in Southern California staging autocross, we had hoped
to
expand participation by Corvair owners throughout the West," he said.

President Tim Chew, Santa Barbara, said Ventura County Corvairs will study
expanding the number of events held at Camarillo Airport. Two have been held
in
2004. Director Brian Shaneman, Newbury Park, revealed he has a plan for
increased participation by young drivers at the venue.

Dave Palmer, CORSA Regional Events Committee Chairman, had supported the plan
for adding a driving event to the annual swap meet in Palm Springs. The 27th
meeting is the world's largest Corvair swap meet and car show. It will be
held at Pavilion Field in Sunrise Park November 12-14. He is also a strong
supporter of teaching young drivers car handling skills.

Ventura County Corvairs is a non-profit family club dedicated to the
promotion and preservation of the classic sixties Chevrolet Corvair. With over
60
members, the group produces the popular Poppy Run driving event every April
in
addition to autocross. It also schedules participation in parades, museum
visits, technical sessions, car shows and dinners.

Meetings are held the second Tuesday monthly from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Mike's
Fiesta Restaurant, 2350 S. Victoria, just off Hwy. 101 in Ventura. Annual
dues are $20.00 per family, which includes an award winning monthly
newsletter.
