Hello JR and all,

All FC's (as well as 60-64 cars) had the speedometer driven from a worm
gear on the pinion shaft in the differential. A drive adapter with a spur
gear fits into a machined hole in the side of the differential case so that
it meshes with the worm. The cable attaches with a threaded coupling to
the drive adapter. The spur gears were available with different numbers of
teeth to adjust for different ring & pinion ratios and tire sizes.

The '65 Greenbrier was unique with a '65 car style differential case that
was bored for the speedometer drive. I know this subject intimately
because the differential failed on our '65 Greenbrier (#1000) on the way
home from Lexington. (Two ring gear bolts broke off and wandered around
through the gears and cracked the case) With the help of Ken Hand, I was
able to modify a spare '65 car case to take the speedometer drive
adapter. Last week I finally had the newly rebuilt differential installed
and our Greenbrier back on the road.

I have kept the fixtures and tooling needed to modify a '65 or later
differential case for the speedometer drive. If anyone is interested in
this modification please contact me or Ken Hand at Handy Car Care (248)
613-8586.
