Dan
First thing you do-
1.take the regulator back to Retard Auto and see if they will give you your
money back.

GP Sorenson is the ABSOLUTE JUNK bottom of the line parts from an actually
very reputable company, Standard Ignition. of Long Island City NY.
As is usually the case, why is it then Advances' top of the line product???
THE PRICE. Trust me, IT'S JUNK.

1A. Unless looking for a deal on oil, or you just need an air freshener, or
other such trinket, STAY OUT OF ADVANCE AUTO!! EVERYTHING they sell is
cheap junk.

If they won't give you their money back, just leave the piece of crap on the
counter, with a recommendation on what they can do with it.

2. Go to a NAPA store, and get an ECHLIN line regulator. They also have a
"discount line" regulator that is as big a piece of crap as the one from
Retard Auto. OR

3. Find an independent jobber parts place like Big A, Parts Plus, etc. and
ask the guys if they have Standard Ignition Parts. Buy a regulator from
them. I personally use nothing but Standard Ignition regulators, coils, and
Cap/Rotor sets, the last two from the BLUESTREAK Line. Compare a Bluestreak
cap to even a AC Delco cap and you wil see and feel the difference.

It is unlikely that a jobber would sell you the wrong parts for your
Corvair, but if they don't look right, Tell them it's for a 65 Nova 6 Cyl.
Its the same stuff.

OR 4. Go to your Local AUTOZONE (Autobone) and buy a Wells Regulator. Used
to be good USA made quality, but check the box first. If it says "Hecho en
Mexico" on it, just leave it there and walk out. Some of their stuff is
still made at the main plant in Fon du Lac, WI.

4A. Unless you need a battery (their Duralast Golds are Interstates in a
Black case), or Bosch W8AC plugs, or the trinkets and such from 1A, STAY
OUT OF AUTOBONE TOO!!! More cheap junk. You want USA made Brake Rotors, or
ones that come from Argentina?? Or motor mounts (non Vair) from India?

5. Best Solution. Get a AC delco SI series 78 amp Internally Regulated
Alternator. Tell the guy you want one for a 79 Impala with a 305. DON'T
Take your old Vair core alt with you. Swap the Face Plate, pulley and fan
with your Vair Alternator. Then look at the tech guide to see how you can
re-wire your Vair to use an Internally regulated alternator. This is the
best possible solution for a driver, as you now have more amps, and NO
external regulator to fail on you.

Hope this helps
