I want to address the things I noticed that GM changed to lower the cost to make the Late models. The removal of the 'B' pillar, moving the engine intake lovers off of the engine lid and on to the rear panel below the rear window
simplified these parts.

Ned,

The lack of a B pillar is a styling issue as well. It creates a true hard top car. Lack of louvers would reduce cost, but it also creats a cleaner looking design.

As for some other issues in cost cutting, we all know GM reduced build quality each year to increase profit (or reduce loss, depending on whose book you read). But the entirley new design in 1965 required all new tooling, which took a major financial commitment on GM's part. Improved rear suspension, engine improvements all cost money as well.

Of course if they had given the 1960 Corvair the suspesion they gave the 1964, Ralphie would have never had a career and we might still be able to buy a new Corvair today. Not that he killed the car. But it took GM 5 years to get the EM right, and they got the LM right in the first year.
