<VV> How do I find the history of my car?

I found that Carfax doesn't accept anything but a 17 digit VIN. I had a
'79 Sub that was stolen (along with the title) and driven to California.
I'd love to have traced it down, but back in '81 when it happened,
Carfax didn't exist. Besides, even if they had, the Sub didn't have a 17
digit VIN.

So I'd like to know how to trace such cars as well, without a labor
intensive and expensive romp with that state's DMV.
