That is an interesting idea, Bob.  I am not sure you would be able to hear 
the noise of loose rivets versus tire noise, but it might be worth a 
try.  Also, you would not know how far out it was.  If trying this, I would 
remove the spark plugs and make it easier to push the car around without 
any compression.

As far as taking a lot of work, I suspect you could just take a piece of 
metal and have it close to touching the flywheel and the casting.  Then 
rotate the flywheel and see if the spacing increases and decreases.  That 
should be simple.  Removing the spark plugs for this would be easier also, 
but might not be needed.
