While there are other considerations, primarily it's an issue of 
breaking in the ring material in regards to the accurracy of the 
boring/honing process. If you could produce literally a concentric bore 
then a plateau of 5 ra  would work and there would be no break in time. 
But in the real world imperfections have to be factored in. Most of the 
ring manufacturers are adamant against fine finishes because they have 
no way of knowing how good the final hone job will be. A mirror finish 
yet with an out-of-round barrell will do little good.

Remember that, the  rougher the finish the more contaminants will be 
distributed through the oil and the engine. Ideally you want the finest 
ra you can get (That includes the plateau  finsh) so long as the work 
itself can match. Lon
