Something (likely inside the cap) tore that rotor off the shaft. This will
have imparted a counter-torque to the turning shaft, which would have been
taken up at the gear. The gear COULD be stripped (missing a tooth,
whatever). First, make sure the rotor turns when the crank turns. Then check
the timing, which you will have to do statically since the engine won't run.
Even if the gear is not stripped, the locating (cotter) pin may have bent or
even shorn. Pull the distributor and check the pin when you check the gear.

Guys,
My 66 110 died this AM on the way to work . Rotor had broken keyway and was
free on the shaft. Replaced the rotor and car still won't run. Any ideas.

Thanks,
