OK,  I guess I screwed up when suggesting a door bell transformer because
the output is AC.

SO, here is the cheap "battery minder" solution.  Look around the
house/garage for the old AC adapter to some appliance that is long gone -
tape recorder, answering machine, whatever.  Check the label.

I just pulled three of them out of a cabinet and find one is (output all DC)
6V - 200 mA, one is 12V - 500mA, and one is 13V - 1 A.  So, mount alligator
clips to either of the last two and I've got a free (+ cost of clips)
battery minder.  The wire with the white stripe is the positive side.

Anyone see a problem with this approach?
