As long as we are writing about plastigage it may be helpful to elaborate
on how to use it. All parts must be clean, dry, and free of oil and
grease or assembly lube when using plastigage. I typically clean the
parts with lacquer thinner before using plastigage. Use the appropriate
size, commonly green for rod and main bearings and camshaft bearing bores
and oil pump covers. Be very careful not to move or rotate the parts
being checked as any movement can cause an erroneous reading. Tighten
the fasteners to the proper torque as specified in the shop manual. If
you can not find what the torque should be, ask on this list and someone
will respond with the correct information. I have not found the
plastigage at some of the discount parts houses in my area. I have
ordered it from Corvair vendors and J.C. W. Check with your FLAPS to
see if they have it, if not ask them if they will stock it for you. It
is not always easy to get on a moments notice. It is quite inexpensive
and not going to break any one to have a few spare pieces on hand. I
usually do but I have run out at inconvenient times. I hope this helps.
