<VV> Importing a Canadian Yamaha

Hi - I am trying to anticipate what I need to bring in and register in New 
York a Canadian spec Yamaha mc.  It is a 1987 2 two stroke, street legal in 
Canada with Canadian title and the last ones that were US spec were similar 
(possibly identical) were the 1985 ones. 

Will I need EPA or DOT paperwork? Will the speedometer have to be in miles? 
What might the routine be  at Motor Vehicle? I don't want another $ blackhole. 
Any help on this will be appreciated.
