Every year after the International Convention, there is always a flurry
of posts about "the convention"; what was good, what was bad, how
things should have been done, where the next one should be, why it
shouldn't be where it is going to be, etc. This year has been no
exception. In addition, there has been lots of "conversation" about
mini-conventions.

An idea popped into my head recently: How about a "Corvair Tour"? Many
of you are familiar with the "Hot Rod Power Tour". A friend of mine has
gone on it the last couple of years and has a blast. They have a
starting point where many participants meet. Then on a certain day,
they start off on the "tour". Every night they stop in a different town
along the way where they have what is essentially a big car show or
cruise-in. They stay in motels. Some probably sleep in their cars or
something. Not everyone travels the whole route. Some pick it up along
the way and go a ways, then return home. This year they started in
Dallas (Arlington TX) and ended up in Green Bay Wisconsin.

This year there was a guy named Bill Brownell from Crystal Lake, IL who
drove a Corv-8. It is featured at:
http://www.hotrod.com/2004powertour/113_day1_2004/. There is more about
it under "day 2" and "day 3". Go into the web article and take a look
at the photo galleries, there's even a good picture of Iowa under "day
5" :) Anyway, Bob's described as a "long hauler" meaning he drove the
whole route. Any of you CCE guys know him? There were to be 2,500 such
long haulers. These cars cover the gamut, from a Corv-8 to blown T's,
to big-block '55's to... you name it!

So, how about organizing a "Corvair Tour"? Start at one coast and end
at the other. Or, make it more regional, run from Main to Florida or
something. Maybe this would be a project for someone like NECC or a
club like CCE. The Hot Rod tour has lots of sponsors and participation
by manufacturers. The route could stop at significant landmarks or race
tracks; go through Indy and get a couple of laps around "the brickyard"
for example. Get the sponsors to feed the crowd and give prizes, etc.

Anybody game?
