If Nitriding is surface treating then a 10/10 turned crank no longer has any
benefit from nitriding. Is this sound thinking or is it more complicated
than that?

Ron,

You are correct, once you have the crank turned, you have removed the
nitrided surface from the bearing journals. If you want the hardened
surface, you will have to have it re-nitrided.
