distributor gear was set to line up with the rotor so the assemblers at
the factory did not have to take the distributor cap off while
assembling. The gear can be on either way.

    That may be so what is said above, but if you look in the shop manual it 
does say to align the dimple on the gear with the notch for the rotor. If you 
put it on backwards the rotor is not perfectly lined up where it should be. It 
is only a few degrees but it is off.
