For a street Corvair with heavy duty springs I'd think twice before 
cutting the coils. You will have a very firm ride, probably stiffer 
than most people would want. If you really want to do it go ahead. You 
can always put the old ones back in.

You'll hear different recommendations about how to cut them. I've found 
a powered cut-off wheel to do a nice job. You can also use a torch. 
Some say you need to flatten the end. I never did. When installing, be 
sure you get them seated correctly.
