I have not even dared to start the engine again. I just took the plugs
out and tried to manually crank the engine using the fan belt after
disconnecting it from the blower. It budged about a centimeter and no
further. My worry meter was pegged. I decided to bring out the
troops. I took off the oil filter ( I use a 45 degree setup) using the
advise I've gotten from the vv about putting a plastic bag over the
filter to reduce spillage. That little idea worked great. I manually
turned the crankshaft using a 3/4 socket. I turned though the complete
720! The worry meter began to drop immediately. I know I'm still not
out of the woods yet, but I caught a glimpse of a light. An unfrozen
engine is a wonderful feeling at this point. I continued to turn the
crank completing 720's and stopping making three complete cycles. It
takes a fair amount of pressure to turn it but not more than I had to
before this whole mess started. I'll chalk it up to having a tight,
rebuilt engine. I listened for any peculiar noises or tension points
during the turning. I neither heard or felt anything. It was smooth
turning though out the 720 cycle.
OK, Corvair mavens; what would you test, try next, short of starting
the engine? Try and get back to me tonight if possible as I'm already
dressed for exploration.
