I have not even dared to start the engine again.  I just took the plugs 
out and tried to manually crank the engine using the fan belt after 
disconnecting it from the blower.  It budged about a centimeter and no 
further.  My worry meter was pegged.  I decided to bring out the 
troops.  I took off the oil filter ( I use a 45 degree setup) using the 
advise I've gotten from the vv about putting a plastic bag over the 
filter to reduce spillage.  That little idea worked great.  I manually 
turned the crankshaft using a 3/4 socket.  I turned though the complete 
720!  The worry meter began to drop immediately.  I know I'm still not 
out of the woods yet, but I caught a glimpse of a light.  An unfrozen 
engine is a wonderful feeling at this point.  I continued to turn the 
crank completing 720's and stopping making three complete cycles.  It 
takes a fair amount of pressure to turn it but not more than I had to 
before this whole mess started.  I'll chalk it up to having a tight, 
rebuilt engine.  I listened for any peculiar noises or tension points 
during the turning.  I neither heard or felt anything.  It was smooth 
turning though out the 720 cycle.
OK, Corvair mavens; what would you test, try next, short of starting 
the engine?  Try and get back to me tonight if possible as I'm already 
dressed for exploration.
