No problem! Make a bet the problem's right under that cap on the
solonoid...

Same problem with the remote starter. I guess that puts me back at the
starter/solenoid as the source of the problem. Thanks.

Yes, that's an excellent strategy. The switch acts exactly like the
keyswitch. It isolates the problem to either the wiring or the starter.
The way the wires go through the solonoid cap, there could be some
internal short that re-directs battery 12V through the ignition. If the
starter acts normally, then the wiirng and ignition switch could be
faulty.

Jim:

It doesn't seem to be a function of temperature. It happened once when
the engine was warm but I had run the carbs dry on gas. It seems to be
more like the number of cranks - if the car fires right up it will be
fine. If it has to crank more than a couple of seconds, it will go into
this non-stop condition. A couple of additional details:

1) If I break the battery connection, it seems to release whatever was
causing it to crank. I reconnect the battery right away, and it does
not continue to crank unless I engage the ignition.

2) I checked the wiring at the solonoid, and everything there is good -
no shorts, melted wire, etc.

Is it possible to isolate between starter/solonoid and the ignition
switch by using a remote starter? That is, if I use a remote starter
and it stops cranking when I release the button, does that mean it is
the ignition switch? Or does the remote starter not properly simulate
the action of the real ignition switch?

Thanks.

Hi Brian

Hmmm, I believe you may have a stuck solonoid. The coil inside can
stick/fuse/not let go, causing the engine to crank continuously. Just a
thought, but maybe when the engine is warm, the solonoid is warm and
doesn't stick...

Hi:

My '65 Monza under normal circumstances will start and shut off
properly. If it has been sitting for a while and their is no gas in the
carbs, then the starter motor will not disengage when I turn the key
off. It will keep running until it overheats or I disconnect the
battery ground. The starter and solenoid are not that old - maybe a
couple of years and 5000 miles. Is the starter or solenoid no good or
is this a wiring problem? I am confused, as I would think either one of
those problems would cause it to misbehave all the time. Any thoughts
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
