I'd have to double-check (memory uncertainty?), as I have all the GM
radio manuals, but I'm pretty sure that the "original" multiplex when it
came out was just a "three-knob job" with just a single front and single
rear speaker. Then later on (about the time of the '66 intro) they
changed to a true 4-speaker system (hence the fourth knob.) All the
4-speaker systems had front speakers that were (meant to be) installed
into the doors.

BTW to my knowlege the Corvair multiplex was NEVER available as a
factory installation, as it was in most other GM car lines. They were
always dealer-installed, and available yearly from '65 through '68 for
Corvair. The 12-pin plug was changed for '69 in everything BUT the
Corvair AM/FM radio, which is why it is not "available" for '69 even
though the literature says it is. Maybe as a leftover '68-earlier from
off the dealer shelf....

The tape player system ('67-9) was available as either factory or dealer
installed. It also used the same 4-speaker system. It would be
accompanied by an available underdash "switchover" switch when paired
with a multiplex, because you couldn't otherwise run both the tape
player and multiplex with only one speaker system.
