Hi Dave,

Having lived in Minnesota before moving to SoCal, I agree completely.  If the 
garage was warmer than the outside temp, you would probably be pulling in air 
that, when warmed up, would be relatively dry.  The worst case condition 
would be the opposite where the warm moist air from outside is pulled inside the 
still cold garage where the moisture would condense on everything.  Designing a 
system for all conditions can get complicated to say the least.  An A/C or 
dehumidifier is best, though I do not like most dedicated dehumidifiers for a 
number of reasons.  There is something to be said for living in a warm dry place 
most of the year.

A differential humidistat is fine as long as the inside and outside temps are 
about equal.  However if it's a lot colder outside, the relative humidity 
could be quite high outside, but the actual moisture content of the air quite low 
(happens all the time in a Minnesota winter).
