Smitty says:   Art what you are hearing is most likely valve lifter
clatter.  Seems to be most often aggravated by several cold starts.  Run
the engine for 20 minutes and it will likely quit making the noise.   
        Now for the part you don't want to hear.  It is also possible
that the crankshaft is broken at the next to last crank web.  This was
brought to mind by you saying you had broken two fan belts.  When the
engine is running the rear pulley should not wobble even the slightest
bit.
