How could a voltage regulator know that it is on a Corvair?
I've had some pretty cheap meters and don't recall ever having one off that
far myself but I suppose it's possible.  An ammeter would be better but you
can tell if the battery is low enough to be dragging the alternator down by
putting a wrench against the rear alternator bearing to see if it is
magnetized.  It will be if the alternator is doing anything.
