I would agree that designers don't put any thought into ease of maintenance.
No automatic transmissions I know of have drain plugs in them anymore.
Heater cores and A/C evaporators are almost universally a pain to replace
Many FWD cars have removable disks that are mounted to the INSIDE of the
hubs
None of these things would cost much to change.

I don't see how they could have made the Corvair input seal easier to change
no matter how much they spent.
