How are you doing this? I  do it this way. Sit one half of the block ona
solid surface, resting on the studs. Shim the short studs with a piece of
1x3 to make the block half level. Place bearing shells in this half. Oil.
Place crank in this half. Rotate back and forth till your comfortable that
its seated and rotates ok. Place strip of Plastigage on each journal in the
direction of the length of the crank (don't 'wrap' it around the journal)
Then place the other half of the case WITH bearings on the 1st half and
tighten the case bolts. Disassemble and measure the flatened strip. NO
rotation is allowed after the two case halves are mated.
