<VV> Yesterdays ride

I had all the intentions of pulling "Stinky" out of the garage and washing
off the dust and the dirt on the tires that I picked up last fall going
through a construction area, but the call to be driven for the first time
since last December was too must to resist. Just a short drive to see if
everything was OK, turned into a 3 hour ride, photo session and exchange of
Corvair stories..

I took my camera with me in case I found a nice backdrop to take a picture
of the car, since I have never taken any since I bought it in Sept '03. I
road up and down a few roads on our island here and finally found the
perfect setting, not more and a half mile from my house. It was at one of
the county boat ramps that looked out onto the water with old workboats in
the background. The only problem was a man and his daughter that kept
walking behind the car. I waited a while and then he comes over to me and
tells me all about the '64 Spyder he used to own. He went all over my car
and you could tell he had just stepped back 40 some years.

After about 45 minutes they left and I did get my pictures taken. I can see
that my first generation Ricoh digital camera is sadly lacking in quality.

I then stopped by an old friend of mine, who said he wanted to see my
Corvair. He has a house/ hanger along this airstrip. I envy his hanger
space. He has a full size car and a mid-size pickup and two planes in it.
What a garage this would be. He even has a separate room where he paints
and re-covers the canvas on his planes. Anyway it turned out he used to
have a '65 Monza coupe and he was another person who just had to go over
everything on the car, and tell me of all his Corvair tales. He left his in
Germany and came back with a BMW2002, but he hated leaving the Corvair, but
they would only pay to ship one car back at that time.

Three hours later I got back home to a some what upset wife and an
overcooked dinner, who thought I was going for a quick trip down the road.
The funny thing about it was I wasn't more than a mile from my house the
whole time.

These cars sure do get the attention and the people you meet, who have owned
them all have fond memories and good things to say about them. It makes me
wonder why more of these people don't get back into them?
