Actually, the "damper" name was a smokescreen for the real purpose, which
was to add weight and decrease the LM convertable performance down near the
level of the '60 to '64 prototypes.  This was done in an attempt to limit
the anger of the "early adopters" who bought Corvairs before the engineering
was perfected.
