just an addendum to rick's excellent advice. go to www.eastwoodco.com  find
"metal shop" and the section on "mallets, hammers, and dollies".  you will
see several teardrop mallets that would make ricks project even easier; in
addition, the poly in the mallets makes it less destructive to paint.  IMHO,
