We seem agreed that 5 and 2 (that order) are the most troublesome.  Perhaps 
it is lean mixture (makes sense) and perhaps it is lesser air flow (which 
makes sense to me at least).  5 has the hole in the top shroud and 2 has the 
air escaping to pass over the oil cooler.  Perhaps it is some of each.  How 
to test for how much each factor may/may not contribute is beyond my skills.

Were it not for those outlets in the shrouding, it would seem like the 
hottest cylinders (from an air flow standpoint) would be 3 and 4, since they 
are in the middle between two others.  But being closer to the carbs would 
not run quite so lean - an offsetting factor?

Anyway, I think Padgett has the answer to his original question.
