If you send the distributor off into advance land, the starter does not have 
enough torque to turn the engine over.  I don't know why, but I know it is 
true.  Hot engine start problems?  Back the distributor off a couple 
degrees, starter turns faster and away you go.  I actually leave the 
adjuster under the distributor just tight enough that it cannot move by 
itself, but loose enough that I can nudge it if/when I want.
