Smity says this arguing about damaging motor mounts is failing to
recognize the apples and oranges. Earlies up to 64 can surely sustain
damage by jacking under the power train. (All three mounts). 64 rear
monts can be damaged the same way but no amount of lifting will damage
the front mounts. The use of the transverse spring necessitated that
they install a rubber cushion on top of those mounts to limit the up
stroke of the mount when the spring is compressed. The cushion or pad
presses up against the top of the cross member inside the mount mounting
hole. You may still pay a price for doing this as the automatic
bellhousings are not up to supporting the weight of the car.
All the above is in the can happen catagory.
The best place I have found for a good jackstand support is under
the front of the trailing arm of an Early. Use a chunk of 2X4 for a pad
at the top of the jack stand. Very strong and very stable and allows
normal use of the rocker panel jack points.
