Ron:

If you end up with a portable unit, please be sure that you buy one that has an adequate battery capacity.

My brother used to sell portable GPS systems and many manufacturers use a two battery unit which has a limited life cycle especially when the temperature drops. This will adversely impact your ability to trace your path which can be a big feature for hunters and outdoor hikers.

The snowmobile crowd looks for and 8 battery capacity giving them the ability to operate all day before the battery goes dead. If you leave it running all day, it automatically updates and it will prevent you from getting lost - especially when exploring unknow areas.

Obviously, if you have continuous access to a 12 volt automotive adapter, this becomes less of an issue.

Just something to consider as it was the most frequent customer complaint that he would hear.
