<VV> over heating

Matt,
I once drove our Monza over 7 home miles with no moving fanbelt (harmonic
balance had separated). I just drove it easily on local roads until the
after-market cylinder head temp gauge read 450 deg.F and then shut off until the
temp dropped to below 200. Then restart and run another mile and a half until
the gauge hit 450 again. Took about 4 or 5 stops.
Another time Jim and I drove the same car home on a major highway with
only ONE of the two carbs flowing gasoline (the main jet was completely clogged
on the other carb). Using the same temp gauge we kept the temp from exceeding
480 by running the heater full blast (in July). Fortunately, the gauge
sensor was on the side of the engine that had the functioning carb. The Viton O
rings kept the engine from leaking too much oil (:-) And the car ran for many
more years.
Without that temp gauge the engine would probably have been destroyed.

I've driven a 3.89 geared car 12miles with no belt!......stop every time it
started pinging.....wait for smoke to die down...drive on....only problem
was....balance tube connector hoses were fried...causing big MISS the NEXT
day..fixed that...drove several thousand miles more....

one Valve guide became so worn it started missing at low rpm...
