I found  first, second, third, and fourth gears... but no 
reverse.  The  shifter moves into the correct position for reverse, but..

Ron,
First try lengthening the shift rod under the car near the  transmission
about 1/8th to 1/4 inch.  Also check the bushing in the bracket at  the
bottom of the shifter.  A missing or badly worn bushing can cause  this
and damage the end of the shift rod.
