Yes, I have to say that I agree with this. I use very high quality oil (VW's 
own brand 'Synta' semi-synthetic in modern and Vair engines and good quality 
20/50 in the older ones with wider tolerances), and as I buy it in bulk for 
fairly low prices I change it often (every 2000 miles for the old stuff and 
every 5000 miles for the semi-synthetic).

And even then it always looks like water when it comes out! I haven't done 
specific viscosity tests on what comes out, but it always looks absolutely 
horrible, and I am glad to have drained it!
