RE: Oil Changes and Engine Life

The manufacturers of aircraft engine carefully monitor engine life issues.
Engines are rated for time between overhaul (TBO) and the manufacturers are
explicit in many issues about how to get those hours from an engine. Two
key points (and there are more) are: Change oil at the recommended hours of
operation. And run the engine in normal service at least 15 hours a month.
The oil change issue is to assure proper lubrication as well as protection
from corrosion and other part deterioration.....the hours per month are
because an engine that sits experiences internal corrosion that shortens
life. Simply put.......running it in normal service a minimum number of
hours minimizes that loss. Other issues such as gentle changes in
RPM's, cold starts, clean air filters make a difference, but the oil and
minimum hours were right at the top of the list as I recall.
