Depends on the pump but if it does not limit pressure to 3-5 psi, it can 
force fuel past the needle and seat and flood the engine. The best answer 
is to run a return line back to the tank and recirculate excess fuel, that 
way lock never occurs but is also the most complicated. There were some 
later mechanical pumps that provided for a return line but apparently all 
Corvairs used the same mechanical pump with no return.
