Russ,
I suggest it is a leak in your fuel supply system, namely the tank
(filler hose, gas cap). An extreme example is several years ago a LM
corvair driver was taking one of the very sharp right hand turns at Lime
Rock, the fuel came out the filler, ran under the car and contacted the
left rear tire, causing the car it introduce itself to the Armco
barrier.

Also on a personnel note, the fuel smell will remain in the car for a
long time after it splashes out the filler, as it likes to soak into the
nooks and crannies of the left fender.

Getting all the information is most of the solution.

Any ideas what could cause this. I had never had this happen before:

I made a quick sharp
right, almost 180 turn and after that the smell of raw gasoline was very

strong in the car...

(No) signs of gas leaking anywhere under the car. I
continued to drive the car for probably another 10 miles and the smell
persisted, but not as strong as it did at first. I stopped at one end
of
the island and lowered the back windows and never noticed the smell
again.

The gas in the tank was about half full when this started
