<VV> Back Up Lights for an FC

Hey everyone:
 
Another feature of my 4 speed conversion is the addition of back up lights.
 
I have an NOS switch for the transmission and I have added a pair of clear Lucas lights to the engine door.
 
I tried to wire them up the way Volkwagen back up lights are wired (positive side of the coil and an in-line fuse) and the engine would die everytime I shift into reverse.
 
Why does this work on a VW and not a Corvair?
