<VV> coil question..

Did the coils in our lates originally have resistors,
or do I buy one without?  I'm slightly confused here. 
I remember having to put a BALLAST resistor in my 49,
but that was when I put a 45,000 volt racing coil on
it.

Is the difference here basically just weather or not I
have to install a resistor, or if the coil has an
internal resistor?

Someone wanna set me straight here?
