<VV> How to clean engine lid insulation?

Somewhere I have a copy of someone's recipe on saving engine lid insulation,
but I can't seem to find it. From Memory....

Lay insulation flat on hard surface (might not want to do in driveway,
remember you are getting oil out) or lay in junk engine cover. Spray (with
hand held sprayer, light spray) with cleaner like simple green. Let soak.
Use garden hose set to mist and rinse out cleaner. Repeat as necessary.
Let dry, then using a bottle sprayer dilute elmers glue with water and spray
onto insulation, this will bind any loose fibers together. Let dry and
replace.

Maybe the person that suggested this will step up and straighten any errors
out.

I just recently acquired a pretty nice original engine lid insulation. I
want to clean it without damaging it. Any ideas?
