Get a speaker from the Corvair vendor of your choice, or directly from
Custom Auto Sound (cleverly located on the web at customautosound.com).
I don't recall if they still had 6x9 at 8 ohms (I think one vendor
does....Clarks..others may too) but they all seem to have the dual
speaker that fits in the stock location, and can be wired for use with
an original stock radio, or of course as a stereo set up, as I just put
in my '64. The sound is so far superior to what you had with a stock
speaker, and better than what you get with a cheap 6x9 that it's worth
the couple extra bucks.
The radio will work with 4 ohm speaker, but as has been said it will
draw more current thru the output circuit, things will run warmer, and
you'll get substantially less audio output. And my thinking is..even
if it works, why put the extra stress on the components in a 40 year
old radio!
